Electronic circuitry consists of sensitive equipment that can be vulnerable to impairment with the help of transient overcurrent.

What are TVS - Surge Protection Devices (SPDs)?

The results of a surge can be either an immediate failure or equipment damage that becomes apparent over time. Although other types of SPD are available to protect the installation from other incoming services, such as telephone lines and cable TV, SPDs are typically put within the Consumer Unit to safeguard the electrical installation. It is important to bear in mind that by only protecting the electrical installation and not the other services, transient voltages may find another way into the system.

The most used three different types of Surge Protective Devices:

  • A Type 1 SPD is configured at the start of the application, e.g., the main distribution board.
  • Type 2 SPDs are configured at sub-distribution boards (Type 1 & 2 SPDs are available and are usually installed in consumer units).
  • Type 3 SPD is configured close to the protected load. They are primarily only installed as an addition to Type 2 SPD.

How do transient overvoltages function?
