A limit switch is a set of interconnecting devices comprised of an actuator mechanically connected to a set of output contacts.

This switch operates by encountering the movement of a machine part or the presence of an object to make or break an electrical connection. These switches are ideal for controlling the machine as part of a control, safety response, or counter that counts items passing through the point.

Components of a limit switch:

A limit switch is comprised of three key components, including:

  • Actuator Head:

The actuator is the switch part that makes physical contact with the object. To open or close the switch electrical contacts, certain limit switches have the actuator attached to an operating head for translating a rotary, perpendicular, or linear motion.

  • Receptacle or Terminals:

These components comprise terminals, screws, or clamp assembly essential for wiring applications.

  • Switch Body:

The component consists of the electrical contact mechanism and the integrated contacts within the body that open or close the electrical circuit upon activating an actuator.

Actuator Types of Limit Switches:

These switches come with a wide range of actuator types, and the type of actuator used will depend on the mounting position, the required force, and objects for detection. These types are discussed below:

  • Rotary Lever:

With this (lever) actuator, the plate or cam strikes the end of the arm to rotate the shaft with the spring returned and forth and to maintain contact with the switch.

  • Plunger types:

Plunger types are ideal where motions of short-controlled machines exist or mounting space does not allow the lever type.

  • Cat Whisker or Coil Spring:

Coil springs are longer actuators consisting of a coil wire capable of moving or bending in multiple directions. These are typically ideal for communicating the purpose of counting items when encountered.

  • Forked type:

They are comprised of two roller levers and are ideal for maintaining contact. One roller is designed to trip the switch upon movement in the opposite direction, which resets the switch by the second roller.
