What are Inrush Current Limiters (ICL)?

An Inrush Current Limiter (ICL) is an emerging equipment type installed to confine inrush current to prevent slow damage to types of equipment and prevent the fuses from blowing and tripping the Circuit Breakers. At the same time, the negative temperature coefficient is abbreviated as NTC thermistors, and it holds resistors in place, which are typically employed to limit inrush current. 

NTC thermistors can be put in series with the circuit that has to be protected to act as inrush-current limiting components. When turned on, they first exhibit a higher resistance, which stops large currents from flowing. NTC thermistors heat up as current flows, enabling larger current flows during typical operation. NTC Thermistors are specifically created for power applications and are typically significantly larger than measurement-type thermistors.

What are the Applications of Inrush Current Limiters?

Inrush current limiters are frequently used in the input stage of switching supplies that are not power factor corrected in order to reduce the initial surge of current from the line input to the reservoir capacitor. The inrush protection of AC current in switching Power Supplies is the most common application (SPS). Surge current suppression in an SPS is primarily used to safeguard the diode bridge rectifier during the initial charging of the input or charging capacitor.

The components in line with the capacitor may be subjected to excessive current since this capacitor draws a substantial amount of current during the first half of the AC cycle. The diode bridge rectifier receives very little protection from the capacitor's initial equivalent series resistance (ESR).
