What are RF Attenuators?

RF attenuators function like resistors since they are typically designed to mitigate the signal leveling embedded in radio frequency applications and radio frequency circuits. They are characterized by many features, including protecting a circuit stage that resists receiving a high current. Radiofrequency attenuators are used to enhance impedance compatibility, allowing for power transmission from source to destination to be optimized. 

Types of RF Attenuators

An RF attenuator is classified into three types:

  • Switched Attenuators - have embedded high-quality switches that ensure and enable varying levels of attenuation.
  • Fixed Attenuators - In cases when specified attenuation levels are required, they offer a constant value.
  • Variable Attenuators - are installed if great work is needed to continuously change the level of a signal.

RF Composition

According to the required level of attenuation, fixed attenuators are commonly built with carbon resistors of certain values. Precision resistors and calibrated attenuators are needed for high-accuracy attenuation, which raises the price of the attenuator.
