Supercapacitors

Supercapacitors, also known as double-layered capacitors or ultracapacitors and have high capacitance compared to other ordinary capacitors. Capacitors, as opposed to electrochemical reactions, store energy using static charge. When you apply a voltage differential to the positive and negative plates, it will charge the capacitor. This is similar to when the electrical charge builds up while walking on a carpet. When you touch an object, it will release energy through the finger.

Supercapacitors are considered a bridge to the gap between the electrolytic capacitors and rechargeable batteries that are commonly capable of storing 10 to 100 times more energy per unit volume than electrolytic supercapacitors. These capacitors operate in voltages ranging from 1V and 3V for both aqueous and organic electrolytes and provide the benefits of rapid charging and energy storage.

How do Supercapacitors Work?

Before understanding the working of supercapacitors, it is essential to understand the working of ordinary capacitors. A typical capacitor usually consists of two electric plates known as electrodes separated by a dielectric material between them. When a certain amount of voltage is applied, the electrons will gather at one of the electrodes, storing charge. The dielectric material between the two electrodes goes through a process of dielectric polarization that helps increase the capacitance, which is termed the ability of a system to store electric charge.

A supercapacitor also works in the same manner. The only difference is that the wedging material is an electrolytic solution in supercapacitors and not a dielectric substance. When voltage is applied to a supercapacitor, an electric double layer is formed, which positions both negative and positive charges along the boundaries of the electrodes and the electrolytic solution. This specific area is where the electrical charge can be stored. If you want to expand the boundaries of these areas, some activated carbon is utilized because it has many holes that help cover up a large surface area.

Applications of Supercapacitors

  • As supercapacitors serve as a bridge to cover the gap between batteries and capacitors, they are utilized for various applications.
  • They are commonly used for applications that need a quick charge and discharge cycles, for example, in cars used for regenerative braking.
  • Traditionally supercapacitors were used as a backup for primary batteries that served as a bridge to reduce power interruptions or smoothen the electrical flow. These capacitors can still be found in applications like wireless alarm systems, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), smart meters, and solid-state drivers.
  • These capacitors are effectively used in pulse applications, peak power assist, telemetry, and electronic locks. Another influential application of the capacitors is that engineers use them as a backup for generators during power outages. They keep providing power until the switch-over gets to full speed.
  • Supercapacitors are used to capture and store large amounts of collected energy from solar cells, ocean waves, wind turbines, and other such sources that can power low-energy electronics. Supercapacitors are also used in Internet of Things sensor and communication designs because of their capability of operating in harsh environmental conditions over a range of operating temperatures.
  • These capacitors are being used more in the rail industry because of their energy harvesting potential.
  • Wind turbines are another application of supercapacitors in which they smoothen out the intermittent power supplied by the wind.

These are just some of the many applications that supercapacitors are utilized for and effectively achieve objectives.
