What are TRIACs?

A TRIAC stands for triode for alternating current, and it is also referred to as a bidirectional triode thyristor, which is a silicon semiconductor equipment consisting of three terminals or legs that ensure the flow of the current in both directions by the time it is triggered. Triodes for alternating currents are a subset of thyristors and have a resemblance to silicon-controlled rectifiers. However, whereas SCRs and other thyristors are unidirectional, the TRIAC is typically designed to control the flow of current over the sine wave that contains the two halves; thus, the TRIAC becomes bidirectional. A TRIAC has embedded 4-layer silicon equipment that is PNPN, that moves in the positive direction and NPNP in the negative direction. This device is a kind of panel mount or surface mount and is made available with through-hole mounting options in several package types to be compatible with a wide variety of electronic applications and circuits. 

How does TRIAC work?

The main purpose of using a TRIAC is as a low-medium power semi-latching switch. This device functions the same as two standard thyristors but is not directly connected in one direction or back-to-back. To make it functional, a voltage must be applied to the terminal that consists of a gate. This device can be activated using negative or positive voltages, unlike SCRs, which need a positive voltage. When this TRIAC current is activated, it will continue to manage if there is no longer any supply to the gate. 

TRIAC has three terminals; these terminals are as follows:

  • MT2 Anode 2 (Main Terminal 2)
  • MT1 Anode 1 (Main Terminal 1)
  • Gate Terminal

What are TRIACs used for?

These triodes for alternating currents have been commonly used for switching and power automation for AC control systems. Triodes for alternating currents are specially developed in applications like lighting dimmer switches since the utilization of each half-cycle is enabled for the AC wave. At the same time, solid-state equipment can be used in a circuit as a straightforward on-off device in several electronic households and industrial applications. The most frequently used areas are as follows:

  • A small motor control system
  • Temperature control system
  • Dimmers for domestic lighting
  • Speed control for electric fans
  • Liquid level control
