You can detect motion, tilt and basic orientation with a digital accelerometer - and the MMA8451 is a great accelerometer to start your journey with. Its usage range goes from +-2g up to +-8g yet is perfect to use with Arduino or another microcontroller. Also available is the much coveted LSM9DS0 by STMicroelectronics ( 905-4615 ). Inside are three sensors. One is a classic 3-axis accelerometer, which tells you which direction is down towards the Earth, or how fast the board is accelerating in 3D space. The other is a 3-axis magnetometer that senses where the strongest magnetic force is coming from. The third and final sensor is a 3-axis gyroscope that can measure spin and twist, making it perfect for your application.
