Toggle switches, also called actuators, are one of the types of electronic switches and are widely used electrical components for turning devices ON and OFF. These switches are the best for changing the system’s preferences and functionalities, consisting of a lever mechanism, hinge or handle manually operated from one position to the other to make or break electrical connections within circuits. In each position, it usually latches on to place and will stay like this unless moved back.
How Does a Toggle Switch Work?
Toggle switches are available in different designs and configurations. They consist of an armature attached to the toggle, and when it is pulled back and electrical contact is placed into a circuit or removed from it, it activates or deactivates it. The switch will retain its position until it is manually moved back, even though momentary switches also consist of an attached spring that pulls the actuator back to its initial point once it has been released.
Types of Toggle Switches:
As a basic device, toggle switches are found in different designs and sizes to suit various settings. The internal contact points are made from conductive metals like silver, copper, and brass and are often plated with nickel and gold. Some of the main toggle switch models are as follows:
On-on toggle switches, also known as changeover switches, are capable of controlling two devices, and each switch position will activate one of the two.
On-off-on flip switches are varieties of on-on designs. They add a third, impartial off position in the middle. In (on) off (on) switches, the off position is the default resting position, and both on positions will click back to this once delivered.
- Momentary Toggle Switches
Momentary means the switches that are fitted using springs that are used to click the toggle back into its off state once it is released. Most toggle switches consist of a momentary variant indicated with the help of brackets, for example, (on)-off-(on). Momentary switches have a rating of 12V or 15A.
Typical Applications of Toggle Switches:
Toggle switches have a wide variety of applications ranging from simple to complicated ones. The most familiar form among them is the light switches that are unobtrusive and used in everyday life. They are mostly found in:
- Air Conditioning Systems
- Domestic, Commercial, and Industrial Power Points
- Industrial and Electrical Equipment (Ranging from Conveyor Belts to RCDs)
- Airplane Control Panels
- Vehicles (Allow for Access to Headlights, Indicator Light Controls, etc.).
