What Are Bench Power Supplies?

Bench power supplies are plug-in devices that offer an adjustable DC voltage range on their output terminals. Typically, they feature a few knobs and a meter of some kind to help set the ideal voltage. Some additionally include current limits for assistance with debugging or testing a new project. In the lab, we have a wide range of bench supplies, from very little to extremely huge! Types of Power Supplies:

The two most commonly used types of power supply are linear and switch mode. Both can be utilized as bench DC power sources.

  • Linear power supplies

Operate by converting DC from AC line power to user-selectable voltage or current levels through filtering and regulation. Because the 50 Hz or 60 Hz transformer and related filters are physically bigger, linear supplies are heavier.

  • Switch-mode power supplies

The AC line input voltage is rectified and filtered in the same manner at first; the DC is then switched (or "chopped") into high-frequency AC. Switch-mode power supplies have taken the role of linear power supplies in many applications because they are substantially lighter, smaller, and more efficient.
