What are LCR Meters?

LCR meters are electrical testing devices designed to measure the inductance, capacitance, and resistance of digital equipment. If the variation is undertaken while the current flows through a conductor, a conforming variation is induced in the voltage generated in both it and the conductor surrounding it. This mechanism is called inductance. Capacitance is the capacity of a substance or a conductor to store electrical charge. Resistance is the impedance a conductor provides to the flow of an electric current through it.

 

The impedance of components is often measured using an LCR meter using AC signals. Make sure you are using the proper settings when using an LCR meter, because using the incorrect parameters can result in an inaccurate measurement. LCR equipment comes in both digital and analog varieties. While the digital variety is thought to be more accurate, the analog variety is less expensive.

What are the most common types of LCR devices?

Handheld LCRs: They are small, handy, and portable. They come with several test frequencies, and the signal or data they record can be transmitted to a PC through a USB port. They have been utilized primarily in field operations.

Benchtop LCR equipment: Big and Bulky, they are typically used for operation purposes on programmable frequencies and can be automated through a computer system.

Frequently used techniques with the LCR Meter

Bridge Method: This technique is employed for measuring frequencies that are limited to 100 kHz.

LCR Measurement by Current-Voltage Technique: With this method, the LCR measuring component is carried out to measure the current. and voltage in the best possible way. These two quantities can determine the resistance that something faces while flowing. 

What are the applications of an LCR Meter?

An electronic LCR meter is employed to calculate the resistance against the current flowing through a Device Under Test, abbreviated as "DUT." Furthermore, since it measures the voltage throughout the current flowing in the system and the phase angle between varied currents, you can determine the whole blockage towards our parameters when you put these three factors into view.  Thus, an LCR meter measures the following parameters related to a circuit:

  • Dissipation factor
  • Current
  • Resistance
  • Quality factor
  • Voltage
  • The phase angle between the current-voltage
  • Inductance
  • Capacitance
