CAN, or Controller Area Network interface, integrated circuits are manufactured to establish a secure connection for efficient communication among devices. Each node is set up to take data from the sensor equipment and send it to a computer.

What are the types of CAN interface ICs?

CAN Controllers - are confined by the CAN bus and the selected application. This controller makes use of the data or signal from the application and transforms it into a format suitable for the CAN bus. 

CAN Transceivers - traces and moves data to the bus as input and output. This device makes use of single-ended logic. Moreover, the transceiver is always available to transform data into a differential signal for the CAN bus. 

What is the difference between Integrated and Standalone?

Controller Area Network integrated circuits are classified into two main types:

  • Integrated circuits refer to the integration of more than one controller or microprocessor on the CAN bus or network system. The integrated controller needs limited space and enables quick and stronger communication with a Microcontroller.
  • Standalone refers to a single controller installed on the CAN bus or network system. It is a standalone CAN bus that works as a memory chip, ensuring flexible, accurate data transmission in the system.

Typical applications of the CAN interface

CAN connections, which are frequently used in automotive applications, enable communication between devices on a local area network. These devices are also frequently used to support semiconductor-based machinery in a range of industries, as well as in the manufacturing of medical devices and factory automation systems.

The Maxim Integrated CAN Transceiver has +5V control area network (CAN) transceivers with integrated protection for industrial applications. These devices have extended ±65V fault protection on the CAN bus for equipment where overvoltage protection is required.
